In recent years the Parley has developed the first consort of Renaissance violins to be heard in modern times. The players use instruments which are copies of late 16th century models, and a rare original 17th bass violin, the precursor of the cello. Renaissance violins have short, thick necks, light internal construction and gut strings, and are played with a short bow; it is possible to produce a viol-like and more blended sound than the more familiar baroque violin.
The Parley has a wealth of experience using early stringed instruments and their technique, and its performance of the music of Dowland, Monteverdi and their contemporaries have a rare authority and conviction.
